Upon completion of participating in the ASCCA 21st Annual Meeting, attendees will be able to:
- Evaluate current basic and clinical research relevant to the art and science of critical care
anesthesiology.
- Identify and discuss current clinical decision-making dilemmas in critical care.
- Assess the scientific and clinical importance of posters presented at the meeting with clinical
leaders in critical care.
- Debate the effectiveness and/or importance of checklists in ICU care.
- Identify and discuss benefits and risks to industry partnerships in the development of new care
strategies in the ICU.
- Describe recent experiences in critical care under extreme conditions.
- Evaluate and debate recent advances in critical care literature.
- Identify and evaluate the benefits and downside of current, critical care staffing patterns.

Applying Critical Care in the PACU: Three Common Problems
Date: Sunday, October 19, 2008, 7:00-8:15 a.m.
Location: Rosen Centre - Ballroom DE
Objectives:
- Review the methods of providing non-invasive respiratory support including various
forms of positive pressure devices from CPAP, BiPAP and mechanical ventilator use with full face
mask or novel nasal devices;
- Review recent literature on the use of perioperative beta adrenergic
blockade. Focus will be placed on recent evidence for reducing myocardial complications and the
use of most recent additions to beta blockers;
- Describe the most current causes of, and methods
to treat acute post operative delirium in the PACU;
- Recent advances in pharmacologic therapies
that may be used to treat delirium;
- Novel advances in detection and treatment of post operative
cognitive function will also be reviewed.
